Mtskheta, Georgia 2026 | A Day Trip from Tbilisi to a UNESCO Town

Mtskheta is a small town about 20 km north of Tbilisi and until the 5th century AD was the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia (Kartli). Its three historic monuments, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Jvari Monastery and Samtavro Monastery, have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1994. Most travellers see Mtskheta in 3–4 hours, by taxi or minibus from Tbilisi.

This guide says what each monument offers, how to get there from Tbilisi, in what order to visit and what to know before you go. If you have not planned Tbilisi yet, first see 15 sights of Tbilisi.

Where is Mtskheta and why does it matter so much?

Mtskheta stands where the Mtkvari (Kura) and the Aragvi rivers meet and for centuries was the political and religious centre of eastern Georgia. According to tradition, Georgia adopted Christianity here in AD 337; that is why Georgians call Mtskheta the "holy city" and the cradle of their country's Christianity.

The town is small and its old centre can be seen on foot: narrow cobbled streets, souvenir shops, cafés and old walls lie close together along a short route.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral: Mtskheta's main monument

Svetitskhoveli was built in the early 11th century (about 1010 to 1029) and is one of the most important and largest churches in Georgia. Its name means "Life-giving Pillar". According to Georgian tradition, Christ's robe is buried beneath this church; this is a religious tradition and cannot be proven by historical evidence.

Inside are frescoes and the tombs of Georgian kings. Entry to active churches is usually free, but keep quiet during services and avoid flash photography.

Jvari Monastery: the best view

Jvari means "cross"; it was built in the 6th century AD on a hill above the meeting of the two rivers. It is a small, plain building, but the main reason to come is the view it gives of the town of Mtskheta and the two rivers. From the town to Jvari is about 10 minutes by car and most travellers go by taxi or tour.

Early morning and near sunset have better light for photographs and fewer crowds.

Samtavro Monastery and a walk through the old town

Samtavro is about five minutes' walk from Svetitskhoveli. Its foundation goes back to the 4th century (the present building is from later periods) and, according to tradition, King Mirian III and his wife are buried there.

The narrow street in front of Svetitskhoveli is full of souvenir shops; see a few shops and compare prices before buying.

How do I get to Mtskheta from Tbilisi?

  • Minibus (marshrutka): leaves from Didube station in Tbilisi, takes about 30–45 minutes and is the cheapest option.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing apps: about 30 minutes. If you also want to see Jvari, agree the price for the return trip and the stop with the driver before setting off.
  • Tour: most day tours combine Mtskheta and Jvari with Gori and the cave town of Uplistsikhe.

The distance is about 20–25 km. Fares change; ask before you board.

Suggested plan (3 to 4 hours)

  1. Leave Tbilisi early to arrive before the tour groups.
  2. Jvari first (about 45 minutes) for the view and photos.
  3. Then Svetitskhoveli (about 45 to 60 minutes).
  4. Samtavro and a walk through the old streets, lunch at one of the cafés.
  5. Return to Tbilisi; if you have time, combine Mtskheta with Gori in one day.

Tips before you go

  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered. In Georgian churches women are usually expected to cover their heads; some places provide cloth at the entrance, but it is best to bring a scarf.
  • Season: spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot and winter cold, sometimes with snow.
  • Shoes: wear comfortable shoes; the paths are cobbled and slightly uphill.
  • Money: most places take cards, but some lari in cash is handy for small shops and fares.
